Adult Liver Transplantation Program

The adult liver transplant service at Mount Sinai is one of the busiest in the world, currently performing approximately 150 transplants annually; nearly 1,700 patients have been transplanted since the program was started by Dr. Charles Miller in 1988. Among the nearly 200 publications that have resulted from the Mount Sinai adult liver transplant program are many seminal contributions to the field; particularly noteworthy are advances in transplantation for hepatitis C and for hepatocellular carcinoma, and the development of innovative surgical techniques including living donation.

Since the first transplant fellow was recruited in 1989, 23 fellows have been trained at Mount Sinai; all of the graduates of the transplant fellowship have gone on to successful careers in the field, including seven who have become transplant program directors. The transplant fellows are a key component of the adult service, spending about half of their time on adult liver transplant rotations.

The wealth of clinical material and the availability of a robust liver transplant database facilitate clinical research in adult liver transplantation at Mount Sinai . Transplant fellows are encouraged to develop and carry out research projects and are supported to present their findings at major meetings. Clinical research tasks such as IRB submission and the preparation of manuscripts are facilitated by an active team of research coordinators and a medical editor, helping to enable our busy fellows and faculty to carry ideas through to completion.
