he timing of your evaluation plays an important role in the outcome of your treatment. Therefore, evaluation should not be put off until you are extremely ill. Prompt evaluation is particularly important for patients with TPN complications or liver disorders. Patients with liver diseases as well as intestinal failure should seriously consider an evaluation for intestinal transplantation before end-stage liver failure develops. The risk involved when two organs have failed is considerably greater than when only intestinal failure is present.
A number of medical studies will be required, some of which can be done at your local hospital and some of which need to be done at Mount Sinai. In order to obtain the best results from these studies, it is important to have your referring physician call us to discuss your case before you undergo additional tests. These tests may include:
- Motility studies
- UGI and Small Bowel X-Ray series
- Barium enema
- Upper GI endoscopy
- Doppler exams of the internal jugular, subclavian, and
femoral veins
- CT scan of the abdomen
- Blood tests:
- Liver function
- Electrolytes
- Immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG levels
- Antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B surface antigen, and hepatitis B core antibody
We will also need copies of your medical records for our team to analyze and review directly with your referring physician. If you are currently on TPN, we also will require your TPN formulation.
