Programs
Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation
History
The Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation Program at Mount Sinai began in 1967, making this center one of the first kidney transplant programs in the region.
As of early 2008, we have performed nearly 1,700 kidney transplants and 130 pancreas or combination kidney/pancreas transplants. As part of our commitment to enhance the quality of life for patients before and after transplant, surgeons at our hospital performed the first laparoscopic donor surgery in New York State in 1996, a procedure that dramatically reduces recovery time for individuals donating a kidney to a loved one. So far, more than 600 laparascopic donor surgeries have been performed.
Operative Services

- Living unrelated kidney transplantation (Living donation from a spouse or a close friend is possible with long term survival comparable to living related transplantation. We have performed more than 100 living unrelated transplants.)
- Laparoscopic living donor surgery (More than 50 percent of the kidney transplants we perform today are living donor, and virtually all are done by the laparoscopic method. We have performed more than 450 of these procedures to date.)
