Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation

Referrals

Patients interested in kidney or pancreas transplantation should schedule an appointment by calling our office at (212) 659-8086. The receptionist will forward your call to the referral coordinator, and your demographic, dialysis, and insurance information will be taken. Once we have received clearance from your insurance carrier (usually within three business days), you will be called to schedule an appointment.

Beginning with the first appointment, patients will undergo an extensive evaluation at Mount Sinai, most of which will be performed in one visit. The multidisciplinary kidney/pancreas team evaluating patients includes nephrologists, cardiologists, transplant surgeons, social workers, nurse coordinators, and nutritionists who review your medical history, assess your physical condition, and carry out a series of tests. For patients who will be undergoing the living donor procedure, we will also perform evaluative tests on prospective donors to make sure he or she is a match.

An inpatient evaluation procedure was recently implemented where patients are admitted for one night and two days to complete all necessary tests.

  • Untreated active or chronic infection
  • End-stage heart, liver, or lung disease (Those patients might be considered for combined heart/kidney or liver/kidney transplantation.)
