Peer Tutoring

As the Director of Student Support Services, Dr. Meah assists in identifying medical students in academic difficulty and offers counseling to all students referred for academic support. She determines whether on-going support by a multidisciplinary team, as outlined below, is necessary. Students with such difficulties may be referred by the Dean and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and/or clerkship directors. Individualized and multidisciplinary learning plans are developed for each student who presents repeated academic struggle in medical school both in the preclinical and clinical years. The director collaborates and consults with the Dean and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, senior peer tutors, learning specialists and behavioral psychologists as needed.

Dr. Meah also serves as Faculty Director of the Senior Peer Tutors. A team of fourth year medical students titled "Senior Peer Tutors" are specifically recruited and trained to assist in the remediation of students with academic difficulties. These students have been specifically trained by the Director through a series of workshops aimed at teaching these tutors to work with academically-challenged students in a comprehensive and confidential manner. The Director assists in linking students in academic difficulty with senior tutors, directs the remediation plan, holds weekly to bi-weekly meetings with senior tutors to counsel them on determination of goals, plans for change, plans for on-going remediation, giving feedback and plans for termination of remediation. Two students will be recruited yearly in consultation with the faculty director to lead the senior student peer tutoring group. Peer tutors are available to all students requesting individualized attention for subject-specific matters. Peer tutors will be directly supervised by the senior peer tutor leaders. The faculty director will be available to advise and counsel peer tutors for students who have been identified as having significant academic difficulty. In such cases the director, in conjunction with student leaders, will determine whether advanced tutoring by a senior peer tutor is necessary.

Dr. Meah serves as the Disability Officer. She develops individualized and multidisciplinary learning plans and optimizes learning environments for students with physical and mental disabilities.

Meetings with Dr. Meah are by appointment only. In general, meetings will be scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9am and 3pm.
