Student Government

n order for students to assume a proper role in the discussion of problems related to the class, each class should develop a form of organization most suitable to its needs.

In September, 1988, a new governance of the School of Medicine was adopted. The effectiveness of this system depends on the manner in which student representation is conducted.

Election of student representatives to the Student Council and appropriate standing committees of the Faculty Council and of the Dean and the Board of Trustees are carried out in the beginning of the academic year. Elections to the appropriate committees as well as staffing for the Student Council are through the Office of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

Students are represented on the Faculty Council Committees, Committees of the Dean, and on the Board of Trustees Committee on Student Affairs. These committees consist of:

  • Student Council
    • Student Council Steering Committee
    • Subcommittees of the Student Council
  • Athletic/Recreation Committee
  • Community Service Committee
  • Library/Bookstore Committee
  • Student Health Committee
  • Student Housing/Security Committee
  • Executive Curriculum Committee
  • Student Admissions Committee
    • Executive Committee
    • Selection Committee
  • Student Promotions Committee
  • Student Disciplinary Tribunal

Student representatives are also elected at the beginning of the academic year to the following national associations: Group on Student Activities of the Association of American Medical Colleges, Student American Medical Association, Student Chapter of the National Medical Association, and the Medical Society of the State of New York.

It must be emphasized that students serving on these committees (with the exception of the Promotions Committee) have an obligation to keep their classmates informed as to the committee’s deliberations, as well as to present issues of concern to the appropriate committee. Toward this end, student representatives are encouraged to hold periodic meetings with other representatives as well as with their class. If student representatives wish to distribute a brief synopsis of important issues to the class, typing services will be available in the Office for Student Affairs.

Deliberations of the Promotions Committee, however, must always remain confidential. Student representatives must refrain from disclosing any matters pertaining to other students.

Students wishing to hold a meeting should request time and space from the Office for Student Affairs so that room scheduling may be arranged. The request will be acted upon only after a request form stating the nature and reason for such a meeting has been submitted.
