The Cardiothoracic Surgery Interest GroupThe Cardiothoracic Surgery Interest Group would be a novel student group with a focus on exposing medical students to this specialty. The faculty, and in particular our advisor, Dr. Joanna Chikwe, are very enthusiastic about demystifying a field with which medical students have very little contact during the medical curriculum. The group would hold cardiothoracic surgery information sessions, scrubbing and suturing sessions, central line placement sessions, and much more. Other planned initiatives include a shadowing program to give medical students a chance to experience cardiac surgery, a transplant call for those students interested in going on heart procurements and transplant runs, and even heart sound series with a cardiothoracic attending where students can listen to and learn cardiac pathology firsthand. An active email list would also allow the group to inform its members of ongoing cardiothoracic research projects for which medical student help is requested.
