Medical Ethics Student Organization (MESO)The physician's role in today's society is always changing, constantly being molded by the people it serves. Technological advances force physicians of the present and of the future to incorporate duties and responsibilities which were unimaginable in the past. As young professionals engaged in a rigorous training that will enable us to practice medicine, it is our belief that medical ethics is a crucial area of study which can give young aspiring physicians an opportunity to explore with their peers as well as those who serve as their mentors and teachers in the health profession. It is the goal of this student group to foster an environment where students and faculty can engage in a dynamic conversation concerning ethical issues in medicine. Although our courses at Mount Sinai, particularly ASM I and ASM II, introduce us to a multitude of medical ethics topics, this group would enable us to extend this discussion beyond the parameters of the classroom. It is also the mission of the group to explore the principles of bioethics and examine whether there is a concrete set of principles by which a physician must abide under any and all circumstances, or whether the principles are merely guidelines that must be re-examined and adapted in accord with the presenting situation.
