Student Health

he Student Health Center is located on the fourth floor of the Annenberg Building and provides comprehensive medical care to medical and graduate students, their spouses and children. It is recognized that the quality and efficiency of medical care given to students will provide standards they may later apply in their practice of medicine.

The Student Health Center is open Monday through Thursday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM, and Friday, 8 AM to 3:30 PM. The staff consists of several physicians and a full-time nurse. A physician will be in attendance for at least two hours every weekday in the Student Health Office. Students should call for an appointment. A physician will also be available for emergencies. After hours, students may be seen by the resident in the Emergency Room of the Hospital. The attending physician on call is to be notified when serious medical needs occur and when patients require admission. If the student needs to be admitted, he/she will be given the first available bed on a semi-private service. After an Emergency Room visit, when hospitalization is not required, the student should contact the Student Health Center for appropriate follow-up and for consultation.

A comprehensive medical evaluation will be given to all incoming students as soon as possible following their arrival on the Mount Sinai campus. It is expected that students will adhere strictly to the appointment schedule.

The Dean and the Student Health physicians have selected a panel of consultants in specialties of medicine and surgery, with the exception of elective obstetrical care, who have agreed to provide care to students and their spouses free of charge. If a student wishes a consultation, he/she must call the Student Health Center to make an appointment with a Student Health Center physician to obtain a referral so that he/she will not be charged. If the student chooses consultation beyond the confines of this group, the financial arrangements will be his/her responsibility.

The staff psychiatrist may be seen by any student wishing psychiatric consultation. A student should first call the Student Health Center to make an initial appointment, after which the student may contact the psychiatrist directly. For prolonged psychiatric care, professional courtesy or therapy at nominal fees are available.

Outpatient department services are available to all students free of charge. Students should arrange for appointments through the Student Health Center.

Students, their spouses and dependents are also enrolled in Blue Cross and Blue Shield for inpatient and outpatient coverage. Deductibles and copayments may apply and are the responsibility of the students.

Medicines carried in the hospital pharmacy are distributed to students, their spouses and children only upon prescription.

Patient confidentiality is observed for all students. However, Mount Sinai School of Medicine believes it is advisable for a student to inform his/her parents of an illness. The next of kin of the student should be told that their son or daughter is in the hospital, but details of the diagnosis need not be divulged.
