General Surgery Residency Program
Rotations
PGY III and IV
Senior Surgical Residency (PGY III and IV)
Residents assume increasing responsibility in all aspects of patient care. Third- and fourth-year residents either act as the senior on a large general surgery service (supervised by a Chief Resident and attending surgeons) or as the Chief Resident on a smaller specialty (i.e., hepatobiliary, thoracic, cardiac or an affiliate hospital).
During the third year, residents spend:
- Two months on Laparoscopy
- Two months on Head and Neck Surgery
- Two months on General Surgery and Trauma Service at Elmhurst
- Two months on General Surgery at James J. Peters VA Medical Center
- Two months as Chief Resident on Pediatric Surgery Service
- One month on overseas rotation in the Dominican Republic
During the fourth year, residents spend:
- Three months on General Surgery Service
- Two months as Chief Resident on General Surgery and Trauma Service at Elmhurst
- Two months as Chief Resident at James J. Peters VA Medical Center
- Two months on Hepatobiliary/Surgical Oncology Service
- Two months as Chief Resident on Vascular Surgery
