Introduction

"Ever mindful of the world in which we live, we dedicate our efforts to preventing disease and improving the health of our communities through scientific knowledge, education and service."
-- from the Mission Statement, Mount Sinai School of Medicine

Community involvement is a founding principle of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. From the beginning, this principle has shaped the curriculum, oriented research priorities, spawned the development of new academic disciplines, multiplied community-based educational and clinical interventions, and steadily strengthened the School's deep, natural alliance with East Harlem.
