The Mount Sinai Program for Male Reproductive Rehabilitation
Infertility is a common problem for neurologically impaired men whose ejaculatory dysfucntion and poor sperm quality are significant obstacles to their desire to
father children. Fortunately, significant advances in the field of male reproductive rehabilitation. These advances include electroejaculation, a procedure resulting in
stimulated sperm recovery, and assisted reproductive techniques, whereby pregnancies can be achieved using suboptimal semen. These developments have
dramatically improved the fertility outcome for men suffering with neurogenic infertility and have provided many couples with an opportunity to establish their own
families.
Program Participants
The program is open to men with:
- spinal cord injury
- multiple sclerosis
- diabetes
- spina bifida
- testicular cancer/retroperitoneal lymph node dissections(R.P.L.N.D.)
- other neurological impairments
About the Program
The Mount Sinai Program for Male Reproductive Rehabilitation is dedicated to enhancing the fertility of neurologically impaired men. We offer:
- Fertility counseling
- Reproductive medicine and surgery
- Electroejaculation
- Assisted reproductive technologies (ART)
Participation in the program is conducted at The Mount Sinai Medical Center on an outpatient basis.
Initially, an educational overview of the procedure and a comprehensive assessment that includes a medical and physical exam, psychosocial evaluation and
laboratory tests are performed. On subsequent visits, we can also perform vibratory stimulation and/or electroejaculation to assess fertility potential.
The female partner is evaluated by the Mount Sinai Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) Program. Couples are counseled and prepared for artificial
insemination, in vitro fertilization or micromanipulation, depending on the quality of sperm obtained and results of the tests performed.
