Center for Affective Neuroscience

The Center for Affective Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai brings together diverse scientists and physicians to explore the biological foundations of behavior. Led by Director Scott J. Russo, PhD, our skilled researchers investigate affective disorders and illnesses such as addiction, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. By working to understand the neurobiology of these conditions, we can develop targeted treatments and recognize how emotions shape human behavior and experience.

Our collaborative research environment ensures that neurobiologists and clinical researchers synergize to affect treatment. We work together and share our ideas early on, moving findings from the laboratory to the exam room more quickly and effectively. Our goal is to develop innovative, personalized treatments for affective disorders and to improve the quality of life for individuals struggling with these conditions. Through our research, we also aim to identify the complex interplay between emotions, brain function, and mental health, ultimately contributing to the prevention and early intervention of affective disorders.
