About Us

Mission Statement

Our mission is to ensure that every child has access to the tools and resources they need to reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances. As part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance, we are committed to being an innovation center that serves children and families all over the world. Our team of clinicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and scientists draw upon current advances in technology to develop breakthrough treatments to tackle some of the greatest challenges facing child health today.

Our Guiding Principles

Inspired by the life, mission, and spirit of innovation of Charles Lazarus, Founder of Toys “R” Us, the Charles Lazarus Children’s Abilities Center holds that when children receive the best opportunities, there are no limits to what they can try and achieve. The Center brings together research and clinical practice, which encourages timely translation of life-changing technology from the bench to bedside. Our Center combines clinical and research excellence to create and validate novel therapies and to ensure that these therapies reach all children who need them. We strive to shape the course of children’s rehabilitation and wellness now and into the future.

Our work at the Charles Lazarus Children’s Abilities Center is driven by the following three guiding principles:

  1. All children deserve access to life-changing therapies: By working with creative and innovative clinicians, we focus on providing novel treatments at the lowest cost possible, regardless of geography or socioeconomic status.
  2. All children deserve tomorrow’s solutions today: In the United States, it typically takes 17 years for new technologies to be adopted by the medical community. This deprives many children of transformational technologies during their critical early years of development. Our team of clinician-scientists develops solutions to overcome obstacles in translating the latest in clinical technology from the discovery to the patient.
  3. Collaboration to accomplish our mission: The Charles Lazarus Children’s Abilities Center works with networks of mission-oriented partners to innovate, investigate, and integrate novel therapies that will reach the very children who need them most, in the New York City area and beyond.
