November 10-12th, 2022
The Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City
Leaders of Mount Sinai’s Skull Base Surgery Center are pleased to announce the inaugural annual anterior and lateral skull base dissection course in New York City, which will also contain a virtual lecture component for those who are unable to travel. Hosted by the Departments of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Neurosurgery, this course is a comprehensive review with hands-on training of skull base open and endoscopic approaches.
Led by Eric M. Genden, MD, Chair of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Joshua B. Bederson, MD, Chair of Neurosurgery at the Mount Sinai Health System, the team will perform a variety of lateral and anterior skull base approaches, including transcochlear, translabyrinthine, middle fossa, retrosigmoid craniotomies, infratemporal fossa dissection and transnasal anterior cranial base dissection.
Mount Sinai is one of the few multidisciplinary centers worldwide dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the skull base. The team is widely recognized for breakthroughs in transoral robotic surgery, transnasal endoscopic brain and pituitary surgery, 3-D navigation planning, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, surgical simulation and innovative research. Trainees of this course will gain thorough assessments of surgical treatments of skull base pathologies.

Target Audience
This course is intended for neurosurgical and otolaryngology physicians, physician assistants, senior residents and fellows (to maximize meaningful participation for those still in training, as senior residents and fellows already have sufficient surgical skills to complete a lab with directed instruction). Most of the dissections require significant experience. We are aiming for 10 dissection participants, and more than 40 people attending the lectures virtually.
Educational Objectives:
- To instruct those attending in the standard techniques of anterior and lateral skull base dissection.
- To introduce and orient participants to novel and emerging technologies in skull base surgery.
- To participate in open discussions about complex cases.
To register for the course, please contact Kerry Feeney, Director of Academic Administration at Kerry.feeney@mountsinai.org or 212-241-7008.
Educational Methods:
The Course is comprised of structured lectures, guided dissections, and case-based panels.
