Message from the Director of Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital and the Fellowship Program Director

The Cardiovascular Training Program at The Mount Sinai Hospital of the Icahn School of Medicine is one of the premier cardiovascular training programs in the country, Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital is ranked No. 4 in the world by Newsweek and No. 4 in the nation and No. 1 in New York for Cardiology and Heart Surgery by U.S. News & World Report® for 2023.

Our mission is to train future leaders in clinical cardiac practice and cardiovascular research. To achieve our mission, we have designed a leading educational program for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, in the heart of New York City. Our program has the size, expertise, and flexibility to individualize training to match each fellow’s interests, skill sets, and long-term career goals.

The culture of innovation at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital has fostered some of the most influential breakthroughs in cardiology, led by illustrious pioneers such as Arthur Master, MD, developer of the first successful cardiac stress test; Charles Friedberg, MD, author of one of the first standard cardiology textbooks, Diseases of the Heart; Simon Dack, MD, the first editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology; Richard Gorlin, MD, who developed the formula named after him that determines the severity of heart valve obstruction; and more recently Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, the only cardiologist to receive the highest awards for research from the three leading cardiovascular organizations. Today's leaders are just as prominent. Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, MBA became the Director of Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital and the Dr. Valentin Fuster Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine in December 2022, touting an extensive and impressive background in interventional cardiology, prevention, heart failure, and vascular medicine. By advancing the educational, research, and clinical cardiovascular work at Mount Sinai Heart, Dr. Bhatt is elevating the institution to new heights in the world of medicine.

Because our renowned leaders have expertise in every subspecialty in cardiology and because of our cutting edge technology, we are a major referral center not only for the Mount Sinai Health System’s 8 hospitals, but a national and international referral site generating a tremendous volume of routine as well as complex and diverse clinical challenges.

Cardiology fellows are encouraged to build academic careers as experts in their areas of interest. The core curriculum includes regular journal clubs, grand rounds, seminars on research methods, and panel discussions with visiting leaders. Fellows receive personalized mentorship on a regular basis with Deepak L.
