The Anesthesiology Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital is fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and accepts 30 residents per year in an integrated four-year program.

During your PGY-1 year at The Mount Sinai Hospital, you rotate in internal medicine, surgery, the cardiac/coronary critical care unit, the surgical intensive care unit, anesthesiology, acute pain management, point-of-care ultrasound and echocardiography, otolaryngology, and emergency medicine.
During your residency training, you learn about two-dimensional color flow Doppler, multiplanar transesophageal echocardiography, total circulatory arrest, jugular venous bulb saturations, jet and high frequency oscillation ventilation, fiber-optic and laryngeal mask airway facilitated tracheal intubations, infusion techniques and devices, and neuraxial and peripheral nerve blocks of all varieties. Not only do we teach you to use the latest medical equipment and procedures, but we also take advantage of the most advanced pedagogical technologies available. We use human patient simulators, which have palpable pulses, breath and heart sounds, pupils that react to light, oxygen consumption, and carbon dioxide production.
Through the program, you learn to manage patients with a variety of conditions. Your role changes as you gain skills and experience. You gain a thorough understanding of the techniques and technologies required to provide the highest caliber of advanced clinical care and take on additional responsibilities as you progress.
Where We Train
All of the ACGME-required rotations occur at The Mount Sinai Hospital, which is the main campus for our program. The Mount Sinai Hospital is a 1,200-bed academic medical center where we perform more than 65,000 anesthetics annually as well as over 8,000 deliveries, of which one-third are high-risk. Our diverse patient population comes from some of the richest and some of the poorest communities in the city as well as from around the tri-state area, country, and the world. As a resident, you are involved with all aspects of peri-operative care, from pre-operative testing clinic through the operating room/interventional radiology suites/obstetrics floor, to the post-operative pain management service and intensive care units. In addition, you spend at least two months at Elmhurst Hospital Center and the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center. We provide shuttle buses to Elmhurst and the Bronx VA hospitals. We also reimburse the cost of taxi transportation to/from affiliates during off hours when the shuttle is not running.
Elmhurst Hospital Center is a 500-bed city hospital located in Queens, the most diverse corner of New York City. You spend one month on a trauma rotation (as Elmhurst is a Level I Trauma Center) and another one-month opportunity to rotate as a senior resident and take advantage of a variety of “bread-and-butter” adult and pediatric anesthetics.
The VA Medical Center, located in the Bronx, is New York City’s first VA hospital and serves as a referral center for the VA system in the lower Hudson Valley. You rotate through the operating rooms and the pain management practice.
You can also pursue elective months in regional anesthesia at Mount Sinai West, the original home of the New York School of Regional Anesthesia, or ambulatory pediatric ear, nose, and throat anesthesia at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, in Manhattan’s East Village. You can take an elective rotation in office-based anesthesia, working at the faculty practice’s ambulatory surgery center and at certain private surgeons’ offices on Park Avenue and other Upper East Side locations in Manhattan, where we provide anesthesia services.
