The Core staff assists researchers in their computing activities by providing hardware and software facilities and expertise to perform the large-scale computations entailed by research in modern biomedical science and in molecular and structural biology.
Hardware:
- An SGI Power Challange minisupercomputer, (a twelve processor system) intended to perform large, computationally intensive jobs.
- Several SGI 02 workstations, three SGI Origin 200 servers (4-processor systems), Sun Ultra 10 workstations, a dual-processor Dell Precision Workstation (Linux), an HP Visualize C3600 workstation, and Pentium III and iMacs.
Software
Packages are provided for such tasks as statistical analysis, numerical and symbolic computations. Some software currently available are GCG, SAS, S-Plus, Maple, Mathematica, Axiom, Matlab, MathCad, and image processing software. Fortran and C++ compilers are available under various Unix, Linux, and WinNT platforms. Researchers have written programs for computational studies in many fields such as sequence analysis, protein and DNA structural analysis, stochastic anaylsis of membranes, neural networks in pattern recognition problems in medicine, and differential geometric methods applied to the conformational analysis of biomolecules.
