Master of Science in Genetic Counseling

One of the longest established and largest programs in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program harnesses basic sciences, medical genetics, medical ethics, and counseling theory to nurture highly successful, compassionate students. The master’s degree program was established in 1995 and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling. At Icahn Mount Sinai, you will be ready to confront profound issues in reproductive genetics, cancer genetics, cardiovascular genetics, and many more.

Genetic counselors play a crucial role in the medical, psychological, and familial well-being of patients, helping them discover and understand the genetic and genomic indications that affect their health.  Opportunities in the field of genomic medicine are growing in the era of precision medicine. Our Program equips students with the skills to thrive in the profession through immersive clinical rotations with leading genomic scientists throughout the Mount Sinai Health System.

Immersive Clinical Experiences

Our Program is integrated within the Department of Genetics and Genomics Sciences, one of the largest departments of its kind in the world. Students go through several clinical rotations alongside exceptional faculty and genetic researchers within the Department, experiencing a variety of patients within a culturally diverse community.

  • Reproductive Genetics: Manage the health and well-being of pregnant people and their fetuses
  • Cancer Genetics: Help families understand their personal or family history of cancer
  • Clinical Genetics: Screening, diagnosing, and treating genetic conditions in children and adults
  • Inborn Errors of Metabolism: Advanced clinical and diagnostic services for patients affected by metabolic conditions
  • Lysosomal Genetics and Porphyrias: Management, treatment, and counseling for patients with lysosomal storage diseases and porphyrias
  • Cardiovascular Genetics: Evaluating, counseling, and treating patients with genetic heart diseases
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Evaluating and counseling patients with cystic fibrosis
  • Laboratory Genetic Counseling: Understanding the role of a genetic counselor in test utilization, variant interpretation, and more

The Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program continually boasts high-caliber students who enter the program with a variety of educational and personal backgrounds that enrich the collective experiences of all. The program has:

  • 100 percent job placement rate for those seeking positions within the genetic counseling field

  • 85 percent first-time Board certification pass rate (based on data from classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022)

  • Attrition rate of less than 3 percent
