Department of Orthopedics

The Department of Orthopedics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai provides exceptional patient care powered by breakthrough science, interdisciplinary collaboration, and our deep commitment to train the next generation in the latest orthopedic technology and techniques.

As part of the larger Mount Sinai Health System, we partner with specialists in geriatrics, neurology, oncology, pathology, and rehabilitation medicine to provide highly personalized care for every patient. Through our Orthopedic Research Laboratories, we also ensure that our research promotes strong ties between investigative efforts and clinical care, which translates into greater patient opportunities.

While training at the Department of Orthopedics, our students learn to repair virtually every joint, including performing joint replacement, executing fracture repair, and saving limbs with bone and joint malignancies. We additionally employ cartilage preservation techniques, including cartilage transplantation, which allows patients to preserve their joints and delays the need for joint replacement surgery. Our training goal is to produce expert surgeons in the following areas:

  • Surgery of the foot, ankle, knee, hip, hand, elbow, shoulder, and spine
  • Total joint replacement for knee, hip, foot, ankle, and shoulder
  • Microvascular surgery
  • Bone tumor surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery

In addition to welcoming trainees through the Visiting Student Program, the Department of Orthopedics offers several residencies and clinical fellowships in orthopedics and podiatry across the Mount Sinai Health System.
