Message From the Director

Mental disorders create a lasting ripple effect at every level—individual, familial, communal, and societal. As the implications of mental health and well-being become more prevalent, it is of the utmost importance to understand how emotions and behaviors play a role in anxiety, depression, addiction, and other disorders. The Center for Affective Neuroscience looks at the broader ecosystem to prevent, diagnose, and treat these conditions, attracting world-class talent across all disciplines who share a common goal to understand the brain.

The Center acts as an intellectual, multidisciplinary hub to unite basic and clinical researchers and neurobiologists. Using rodent and primate translational models, as well as focused studies of human subjects, our researchers are making significant discoveries in how our brains function. Our dedication to cross collaboration allows valuable access to findings and resources at the Center and our various research partners. One example is the biorepository of patient samples from individuals that suffer from affective disorders, such as depression. Researchers at the Center can use these materials to discover biomarkers of the disease or build computational models for diagnosis.

With numerous active studies in progress, the Center is expanding our technological capabilities with the use of artificial intelligence, computational modeling, and machine learning. By harnessing these tools, we can develop predictive diagnostic panels to better understand brain function in affective illnesses and disorders.

We remain steadfast in our mission to alleviate the burden of mental illness and promote emotional well-being.
