Simulation Education and Opportunities

CAMS was granted re-accreditation in Teaching and Education in 2020, and new for 2021, accreditation for Systems Integration and our Fellowship Program.  

CAMS was established at MSW in 2007. It was one of the first simulation centers in the US and was the first accredited simulation center in NYC – initially accredited in Teaching and Education by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) in 2015. CAMS pioneered the first Simulation Fellowship Program in New York City as early as 2007 and it is a great achievement for it to be recognized. The Fellowship Program demonstrates CAMS’ commitment to furthering simulation-based education to healthcare professionals and developing future leaders within healthcare simulation through experiential learning opportunities, proven education theory, and clinical research.   

Some of the strengths that the SSH Board of Reviewers highlighted was our effective utilization of a tightly integrated team, the intimate relationship and support of leadership within the Institution, our faculty support from within the Institution, the quality of the program and faculty, and a strong commitment from residents to simulation. One exemplary practice they pointed out was our Training Arcade, which has attracted new end-users from a variety of Graduate Residency/Fellowship Training Programs.  

Even during the Covid pandemic, CAMS helped to pioneer virtual simulation learning and led in-time training for hospital staff.  On a regional level, CAMS was one of just 4 simulation centers in the city that GNYHA reached out to, to help with cross training health care workers from safety net hospitals in the NY region as part of COVID-19 preparation.  

CAMS will continue to grow and challenge convention through our pioneering spirit, forward-thinking leadership, and collaborative approach.   

Where to Meet/Typical Day

Sim Session (Day Of) — In general we welcome learners in the Debriefing Room, 8A-84A. The learners will sign an attendance sheet as they come in. Once all the learners have arrived, and prior to entering the lab space the learners will be introduced to thefaculty/educators/fellows that will be there during the session. We will also reiterate the rules of simulation, review our Fiction Contract, and the objectives of the session; this is called the pre-brief. It is understood that by engaging in simulation activities, both participants and faculty agree to this contract. 

At this time the learners may also be asked to take a pre-sim survey.  

Sim Session (End) — At the conclusion of the simulation session, learners are debriefed by the faculty/fellow/educator, either in the simulation environment or in the Debriefing Room.  

At the end of the debrief, the learners complete a post simulation experience survey and if indicated, other post simulation activities.  

Simulation Medicine is becoming an increasingly important part of medical education. It provides training to all medical providers including faculty, residents, nurses, and medical students- in an environment that promotes learning and retention, providing experience and exposure to scenarios and medical entities that are critical and life threatening, but are often infrequent in practice. Learning and training in a risk-free simulation environment provides an important venue to teach and learn teamwork and advanced communication skills, and to enhance clinical decision-making. 

Importantly, this is a departure from the traditional and still ubiquitous “see one, do one, teach one model,” which lends itself to medical errors and potential patient harm. Medical simulation has been demonstrated as an effective tool to educate physicians, minimize medical errors and enhance patient safety.

New Simulation Educator 

New simulation educators are encouraged to observe courses delivered by a senior or experienced simulation educator. Additionally, CAMS offers one-on-one training for simulation educators and workshop style sessions.  

Course Scheduling 

To schedule a simulation session, please contact our Simulation Operations Manager, Barbara Sierra, via email and cc. 

Please include the following in your initial request: 

  1. Completed Simulation Request form
  2. Curriculum and any educational resources to be used 

Once received, all materials will be reviewed by the Curriculum Review Committee and a rehearsal or run through will be scheduled for any new simulation program.

CAMS - An overview of RRT, Medical Code, TeamSTEPPS, and Sim Lab Orientation for Nursing
Nursing Education and the Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (CAMS) have partnered together to create a course that will provide you with valuable resources and the tools, necessary to complete your orientation activities.

CAMS - Virtual Reality Arcade Orientation and Guidelines
This course serves as an orientation to the Arcade and the simulators available for use.

CAMS US Guided Central Line Training Course
This course provides a brief overview on US Knobology, emphasize sterile technique, and to review and refine the skills necessary to place a central line in the Internal Jugular Vein.

CAMS - Blood Culture Competency
This course provides a background on the indications for collecting blood culture samples, as well as a procedural overview.

CAMS - Medical Code Response and Overview of Zoll, Suction Setup, & Pre-Filled Injector Syringe
This course, geared to all healthcare professionals, serves as a review of BCLS, ACLS, and the team response during an in-hospital cardiac arrest.

CAMS - Managing the Mechanically Ventilated Patient for RNs
This course provides an overview of Nursing Care, Physical Examination, and Basic Ventilator Management for the intubated patient.

CAMS - High Flow Nasal Cannula and BiPAP
This course provides an overview of devices used, their setup, troubleshooting, and general operation.

Critical Care Sedation Education
This course is geared to Medical Housestaff as a review of the basics of sedation and analgesia titration and protocols, and to improve communication between prescribers, nursing, other interdisciplinary team members.

Mount Sinai West - Maternal Child Health - PANDA Integrated Resuscitation System Course 2020
This course is intended for Maternal Child Health nurses and physicians participating in the care of newborns. At the end of the training, participants will gain understanding of and be able to describe the selected features, functions, and operations of the Panda integrated resuscitation system: Flowmeters, Air/O2 Blender, and Airway Pressure Manometer

CAMS - Prone Positioning Training
This course reviews the indications, process, and protocol for prone positioning for ARDS in the critical care unit.

CAMS holds a bimonthly journal club via Zoom. Throughout the year we choose articles that will review adult education theory, debriefing theories and methods, course development, high fidelity simulation, in-situ simulation, research methods, novel simulation ideas, and other topics.
