Our vision in Pediatric Medical Education is to translate our collective intellectual curiosity, clinical expertise, and commitment to social justice into top-notch innovative education for our residents, fellows, and students to prepare them to provide unsurpassed care to the communities we serve.
Our History
The Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has a long history of advancing pediatric science and serving the needs of New York City’s children. We were founded in 1878 by Dr. Abraham Jacobi, widely recognized as one of the founders of pediatrics, as the first pediatric department in a general hospital in New York City and one of the first in the United States. Since our Department’s founding, we have been led by a line of illustrious department chairs who are pioneers and leaders in pediatrics including Henry Koplik, MD, Bella Schick, MD, Horace Hodes, MD, Kurt Hirschhorn, MD, Fred Suchy, MD, and Lisa M. Satlin, MD.
A Unique Environment For Learning
Our main teaching hospital, the Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital, is located on the border of the Upper East Side and East Harlem in New York City. We are a NACRI certified children’s hospital with the full spectrum of primary care and subspecialty clinical services. We offer the advantages of being embedded in a world-renowned academic health center, health system, and medical school. Our location within the Mount Sinai Health System uniquely positions us to offer unmatched opportunities for collaboration with multiple departments across the health system, enriching the pediatric educational experience of trainees.
The office of Medical Education is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of pediatric education in our Department as well as to the greater medical school. Our goal is to:
- Nurture lifelong learners committed to advancing cutting-edge science in pediatrics
- Facilitate the delivery of compassionate clinical care
- Challenge the status quo as our graduates advocate for health equity in the communities we serve
We offer a broad and diverse curriculum in every facet of pediatrics. We provide an exemplary educational experience in care delivery, quality improvement, and research. Our curriculum spans the spectrum from bench to bedside and public health to policy.
